    From Roanoke – Take I-581 North towards and take exit 1S to merge on I-81 S towards Salem. Then take Exit 141 and turn left onto VA-419 N.  After 0.4 miles, turn right onto VA-311 N. After 19 miles, turn right onto VA-615/Market St. Continue for 5 miles and turn left at SR-611. Next, you will make a right turn onto SR-685 and continue for 1.6 miles. Take a right at Old Jeep Rd, then another right where the road forks. This will bring you to the Fenwick Mines Recreation Area.

    Ferrier Trail and Lick Branch Loop

    The Ferrier–Lick Branch Loop is a 6.7 mile moderate hike that showcases some of the best of Craig County's backcountry.


    This moderate loop takes hikers through diverse terrain, offering scenic overlooks of Craig Creek Valley and Potts Mountain along the Ferrier Trail before descending into the cool, shaded hardwood forests of Lick Branch. Along the way, you'll pass wildlife openings, quiet woodland streams, and remote mountain landscapes that make this trail a favorite among hikers seeking a true outdoor escape.


    The Ferrier Trail rewards visitors with panoramic views and ridgeline scenery, while the Lick Branch section offers a tranquil walk through lush forest and refreshing creek crossings.     The Ferrier–Lick Branch Loop is located in the Jefferson National Forest near New Castle, Virginia.

    From New Castle, follow Cuba Road (VA-616) and continue onto Maggie Maw Road (VA-690). After the pavement ends, stay right on the forest road and continue to the trail access area.

    Hikers can begin at either trailhead:

    • Ferrier Trail Trailhead – Marked with orange blazes, this trail climbs to scenic overlooks with impressive views of Craig Creek Valley and Potts Mountain.
    • Lick Branch Trailhead – Located approximately one mile farther along the forest road and marked with yellow blazes, this trail offers a peaceful journey through hardwood forests, wildlife openings, and cool streamside scenery.

    Located within the remote Shawvers Run Wilderness, this 0.9-mile out-and-back trail winds through quiet hardwood forests, rocky terrain, and shaded mountain hollows before emerging at a dramatic rock outcrop with breathtaking panoramic views.     From New Castle, follow VA-615 (Market Street) south and continue onto VA-609. Follow the route through the countryside, connecting to State Route 611 and VA-617, before continuing along Sweet Springs Turnpike to Cove Branch Road.


    The drive offers a scenic journey through Craig County's rolling farmland, mountain valleys, and forested landscapes, making the trip part of the adventure itself. This trail is approximately 30 minutes from New Castle.

    Lipes Branch Trail

    Looking for a true backcountry challenge? The Lipes Branch Trail offers a rewarding mountain adventure through some of Craig County's most remote and scenic wilderness.


    This 6-mile out-and-back hike (4 - 4.5 hours) climbs steadily through rugged forest terrain, gaining nearly 2,000 feet in elevation along the way. As you make your ascent, you'll pass through quiet woodlands, mountain hollows, and peaceful stretches of forest where the only sounds may be birdsong and the rustle of leaves in the breeze.


    With its remote setting and challenging climb, Lipes Branch is a favorite for experienced hikers, trail runners, and backpackers seeking solitude and a deeper connection with nature. It's common to spend hours on the trail without seeing another person, making it an ideal escape for those looking to unplug and explore Virginia's mountain wilderness. Dog friendly!

    From Roanoke, head north on I-581 and merge onto I-81 South. Take Exit 141 and follow Route 419 North toward Craig County. Continue for approximately 20 miles until you reach New Castle, then turn right onto Market Street (VA-615). Follow Market Street for about 3 miles before bearing left onto Route 609. After approximately 2 miles, turn left onto Route 611 and continue for about 3 miles. Turn right onto Route 617 and follow the road to the trail access area. The final section is a gravel and dirt forest road that leads to the trailhead. This trail is approximately 45 minutes from Roanoke.

    From New Castle, follow Market Street (VA-615) south out of town and continue through the scenic countryside of Craig County.


    Follow the route toward VA-617, which leads into the Jefferson National Forest and the campground area. The drive winds through mountain valleys, forested landscapes, and along quiet country roads before arriving at The Pines Campground. This site is approximately 20 minutes from New Castle.

    Looking for even more excitement? Just a short drive away, Potts Mountain Jeep Trail, at 14.8 miles long, offers one of Virginia's most challenging and scenic off-road experiences. From rugged mountain terrain to breathtaking overlooks, it's a favorite destination for off-road enthusiasts seeking their next adventure.


    This trail is not recommended for standard 4x4 vehicles and requires high clearance suspension and all terrain tires.

    From Roanoke, take VA-311 North through the mountains to New Castle. Once in town, continue on Market Street (VA-615) and follow it south for approximately 7 miles. Turn onto State Route 611 (Peaceful Valley Road) and continue until you arrive at Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing.

    Located along scenic Craig Creek and surrounded by mountain views, the drive offers a beautiful introduction to the outdoor adventures waiting for you. Approximately 40 minutes from New Castle and about 1 hour from Roanoke.
